I can speak English, Russian, and countless Central Asian languages fluently (since they're all dialects of one another).

I can speak basic German/Turkish, and understand Spanish and French, though don't have the vocabulary to be able to speak any well.

My parents both speak over 20 Languages since it's very relevant to their jobs.

Calm down kid. Some people don't even know what Mandarin and Cantonese is. It'll be just easier to say you know Chinese. Stop acting like a smart ass and calm yourself.
    I know Russian and English

Calm down, son... Some people that say they speak "CHINESE" should know what dialect they're speaking, instead of making an idiot out of themselves. So I can go to Shanghai, China and start speaking Cantonese Chinese to everyone while they speak Mandarin Chinese? Is that right? Of course, because we all speak Chinese... *Sarcasm* Stop acting like a douchebag and go back to playing RuneScape.

<3 you, be my best friend? :D Exactly the point, I was trying to make. I think this kid just thinks that Cantonese is better and he has to reiterate the point between the two dialects. BTW why would you start with cantonese first. The majority of the people speak mandarin.

Cool, we're using lame internet memes in a "Language" thread. Awesome... I herd you liek mudkipz...

The reason why I think people should start off with Cantonese first is that they would be able to learn Mandarin almost flawlessly later, because they already learned nine to ten tones in Cantonese. While if someone started off learning Mandarin first, they would have trouble learning Cantonese later on, because of the tones. Also, Cantonese would be pretty important in places like Hong Kong, Macau, Guangdong province in China and some other places in Asia, not to mention that Cantonese is spoken in a lot of Chinatown's outside of Asia. For example: Vancouver British Columbia in Canada, Toronto Ontario in Canada, San Francisco in United States, New York in United States, and many other places. Those are just to name the popular places that people still speak Cantonese in. Also, Mandarin is mainly useful in Mainland China, Taiwan, Singapore and Malaysia(even though a lot of people speak Cantonese there as well, same with Singapore), also a few others which I don't hear about it much.

He states that he knows three types (dialects) of Chinese.

And Chinese is a family of languages, so there would be overlap and such.

Well the comparison between America and Europe isn't really accurate just because of the size. Many European countries all with a unique language would be equal to the size of America so while other European countries may need to learn a new language its logical to assume other American's generally don't. Aka if they don't need to, perhaps a better use of their time is studying something else.

Hebrew is a legit language, I've always wanted to give it a try, but I suck at Middle eastern languages, I can't get the necessary phlegm to pronounce half their words! :[

I don't think anyone here stated knowing three dialects of Chinese. Yes, Chinese is a family of languages, they all came from China, but developed in different ways, Cantonese probably had an influence on Mandarin Chinese, because Cantonese is around 2,000 years old, while Mandarin is around 800 years old.

I live in the US, and I speak English, and am taking Spanish in school, as it's mandatory.

I wish my school had German, or Japanese or something cool, as our school only has Spanish and French :\

I speak English and German fluently. I speak broken Spanish, just enough to buy my drinks at a bar. I also speak some French, Akwa, and a few words in Bobangi that I learned on my trip to the DRC.

I only consider myself bilingual though, as I cannot have a full conversation in anything except the first two I listed.

I speak:(in order of best to worst)
    -Swedish
    -Danish
    -Norwegian
    -German
    -English

Top 3, much like every Scandinavian more or less. German because it's a secondary language to most europeans. English because I live in Canada now.
