Java Help Needed

So I have no idea what I did, but Java seems to be not working on my computer. I have been using and playing just fine, and then one day I tried to update Java to the update 55 and it didn't work. So I downloaded Java again, and I get to the page where you are done downloading and it says "Agree and Continue" to the part where it will verify your Java and make sure that you have the latest while removing the oldest. So I do that process, and then it says "Java download complete". So I go to play Runescape or something, and it says that my Java is out of date. I googled a "Java Checker" and went to a website where it simply checks what Java you have and it wouldn't work. I went back to Runescape and chrome gives me a popup that says "Java (TM) Plug in is needed. Download? Yes/No" And I download it, and it's just a continuous cycle because it takes me back to that verifying Java page where it checks and removes the oldest one. So I don't know what to do. Help?
