Homework help requested

I know it's summer and school's off, but my mom thought it'd be a good idea to sign me up for a ACT class -.-

Anyhow, I need help with my homework. It says for the write the part of speech, derivatives of the word, and blah blah blah. Well, what does derivatives of the word mean??

Ex, if I gave you the words mentor, charlatan, discern, deleterious, morose, aberration, chicanery, unadulterated, tedious, didactic, lexicon, ignominy, arcane, gargantuan

Could anyone tell me one derivative for each of these words? I will greatly appreciate any help! Thanks in advance!!

For aberration:

ab- is Latin for "of, from, by"
-tion, coming from the latin -tio, means the result or action of a verb

So you now can think of aberration as the action of the verb "to aberrate", which has something to do with of, from, or by.

Then you can think of common words that match the middle. I.e. errant means "straying from the proper course or standards"

So abberate probably means to depart from an accepted course of action, and aberration is the act of departing from the course of action.

It wasn't very helpful here because "errant" is just as uncommon a verb, but derivations of words and breaking them down into prefixes (the beginning part) and suffixes (the end part) can be very helpful in determining the word's meaning.

Also, I suggest you take both and SAT and ACT practice and decide which one to take on the test that you do better on.
