Help make grave's build

Hello,

This thread will be dedicated to making my new computer as cheap and awesome as possible, with your help. I'm fairly experienced with building computers and selecting builds, but I'm venturing pretty high up with this one and I want to make sure nothing is done wrong or wasted.


The goals:

• Cheapest, best parts possible
• At least 128GB RAM
• Future-proof as possible
• RAID 10 configuration w/ SSDs
• Support as many monitors as possible
• Liquid cooling throughout

Post away. We should probably start out with a good motherboard.

 

What the hell are you going to use 128gb of ram for. Ill brainstorm for a bit though. Got a price range?

128GB of RAM is expensive, goodluck.

 

On another note you'll need a server mobo for that much RAM

Actually one of the new MoBos out runs 128GBs of ram on the same board... Kingston just released their 16GB Ram module as well. But it's EXTREMELY expensive ($2783.98). I'm talking like multiple thousands of dollars...

Why do you need that Grave?

Are you talking about a 128GB Server board or a 128GB standard Mobo.

Like I pretty much just built what you're asking for and it's ~$9k

 

I'm looking for a motherboard that takes 8GB sticks and has more slots, if possible. Also prefer non-server. I've found some that can run about 96 that I might settle with. The semi-reasonable budget is about $5000.

 

Im too stoned at the moment to give you a mock up parts list, but I recommend when you do watercooling to use 7/16" tubing and 1/2" barb fittings, just heat up the tubing using a blowdryer and slide the barb fitting in, once it cools it will be tightly fastened no need for any clamps. A very simple method I learned for watercooling that is pretty much noobproof with no leaks.

 

Mind linking that board? It would help to know what you'd be using this for. 96gb is pretty overkill.

Majority of the other things, this is all on newegg. You can most likely find them somewhere else cheaper.




Note that I didn't add any liquid cooling onto that. Really depends how far you want to go. You can always downgrade the CPU to a 3930k and save $500 and get some better liquid cooling.

 

Trippin swap out those 4 SSDs for this: Samsung

It's ~ $0.57/GB, therefore saving a couple dollars.

Haven't seen the reviews on your board Trippin... but mine has 16 (30%) - 1egg reviews...

 

Mine is one of the best overclocking boards on the market. With that CPU it would be a crime not to be overclocking. Have one myself. If he is doing raid 10 however I'm not sure why he would go with that SSD.

About the loop with that case you can get pretty nutty. Able to fit multiple 480mm rads. Thats my plan with my own computer.

 

Plus those SSD's he linked to are the samsung 840's which are NAND based and therefore write speeds are only a meager 250mbs vs 500mb of a good SSD.
