Your choice, but I personally wouldn't do something just because my dead dad did it. Good money but it changes your personality, puts you at risk and keeps you away from your home and loved ones.

Recruits are victims of pretentious propaganda which trick the ‘would be soliders’ into believing their fighting to save their country. Your dad is a victim of this stereotype. I bet he fucking hated the army, and pray’s you don’t feel inclined to follow in his footsteps.

Then again I never knew your dad.

I would say go for it...the Army, or any other branch of the military could set you up for a pretty good future. Although I'm mainly speaking for the army because I am in it, I do not know much about any of the other branches. If you were to enlist you could sign on for a 2 year contract. . .Which is what I wish I did ( I did a 3 year contract ). Two years in the army would fly by, Ive been in for about a year and a half now and it felt like I just got out of basic training.

Make sure you pick a job that could help you out in the future! I picked "infantry" not much you can do with that in the outside world. . .Good thing I want to be a cop haha. Well so far in my very little time in this is what the army has given me.

    - A guaranteed interview with the Chief of my Police department
    - Free college credit hours ( in the army almost all army schools/classes you take count as college credit hours)
    - Great shape, I was in good shape before I enlisted...now I'm in incredible shape.
    - A great jump start on career and job opportunities (if me and someone else go for the same job with the same credentials...the only difference is I'm prior military. They'll probably hire me instead.
    - A guaranteed paycheck every 2 weeks
    - There's more, but I can't really think of them right now

But don't get me wrong...it definitely has its ups and its downs.

    I say go for it.

EDIT: To the people saying if you want to be a murder...you're ignorant haha. Being in the Army doesn't always mean you're going to be in a combat MOS (job). You can be a cook an x-ray technician, a mechanic, EOD (explosive ordinance disposal). Basically whatever jobs there are in the civilian sector, you'll most likely find the same jobs in the Army.

    Fact.

Do you plan to do officer's training or just enlist as an unranked soldier? I have a few friends going through the Navy for college and they seem to like it.

I say go for it if you want to, it'd be a great life experience.

personally i think if you want to join the war and fight thats your risk, but if you feel like having a 100% chance of getting out of iraq unharmed i would go into a different department like reasearch of technology or something like that.

I think that if you're looking for benefits, you should join the Air Force or Coast Guard. No point in throwing away 2 years of your life and getting little to nothing in return, unless you're really into the whole army thing.

The army doesn't even allow people like that to join. Automatically disqualification at meps, and then you would have to see a psychiatrist to even attempt to get into the military.

    Gratz... What mos?

And you know this for a fact? Proof plzzzz

^^ Very Nice, 11B? 89D is where its at (EOD), except EOD is kinda combat related. You ever have to call in eod wait 2 or 4 hours and then have them mess around for an hour or so until you could leave?

Do what you think is right, what YOU wanna do. Just because it was his dream doesn't mean you have to follow it. BTW if you do consider about joining, thank you sir for protecting our country. I am actually about to serve as well, just another 3 month.. Air national guard btw and then transferring to the Air force.

Yep, 11 bang bang hahaa. My buddy is going EOD actually, he got out of Red Stone Arsenal about 3 months ago...Now he's living it up at Eglin Air force base I believe. He doesn't have too much longer to go (about 1 month until graduation) And

I take it you're either military or prior military with EOD background lol?

I actually have yet to experience the drawn out response of EOD lol. . .although I have heard of it. Mainly because I haven't deployed yet, although I do go to Afghanistan in less than 2 weeks.

    Go Army!

Quote: The increased emphasis on a national effort was reflected in World War I recruitment methods. Peter A. Padilla and Mary Riege Laner define six basic appeals to these recruitment campaigns: patriotism, job/career/education, adventure/challenge, social status, travel, and miscellaneous. Between 1915 and 1918, 42% of all army recruitment posters were themed primarily by patriotism [2]. And though other themes - such as adventure and greater social status - would play an increased role during World War II recruitment, appeals to serve one’s country remained the dominant selling point.
