Because other people aren't fortunate enough to live an area where they are served everything, from food, clothes and education, to roof above your head. Nobody forces you to donate money to charity, but if you care about the less fortunate, don't hold yourself back next time you have spare change and see a legitimate foundation.

You aren't forced to give your money to other people. Although it's considered helping your fellow man and those who are less fortunate then you.

    Empathy, kindness, etc.
I think everybody should give to a charity if they can afford to.

I don't give money to charity.

All charities have to spend some money on running themselves. Telephone bills and stamps don’t pay for themselves. And with the biggest charities, volunteer work may only go so far. It’s quite difficult to find people willing to volunteer full time, but you can find people willing to work full time for very reasonable wages. Some charities do spend too much on administration, but it’s really a very small number. After you donate your money to the charity, how much of that money is really going to good causes and not for their own bills, or their own personal needs. I understand giving money to an individual, such as a child, or elder, your know 85% of what your money is going to that way, but donating large sums of money away to major corporations who say that the money you are offering goes to children hospital bills, or the family of the loved and lost ones is not necessary. Say you donate $50 to a family who's son or daughter has died in Iraq. How much of that $50 do you honestly believe the family receives? %100? No, around %15. They have to pay the people that work for them.

While there certainly is not some magical force out there that rewards nice people and punishes mean ones, I think what he means is that by giving you are helping your community stay stable and make it more likely that you would be helped if you had a time of need.

I for one do not donate to charities. I donate to the individual people who I know who are in poverty. In this way I help the people I love instead of some stranger. Do not get me wrong, I do not want people to die but: Loved Ones> Strangers.

So? Doesn't mean I should give them money.

Surely humans are more important than animals?

Donating to charity is not something you are forced to do. Some people in the world are less fortunate than us. When I visited Lebanon, I saw teenagers such as myself running bricks up 7 story buildings for $3 a day. We sit in offices and earn up to 10 times that an hour.

Look at Iraq for instance. Iraq was on it's on two feet before U.S invasion destabilized the country. Now there is widespread poverty in Iraq, and their are inocent civilians being killed because a government funding by your taxes chose to invade. Think about it this way.

Also, people can barely afford what they need in "Third Word Countries". It's not something we can change overnight, but if we keep pushing it away it will only get worse. For this reason I believe giving charity is right.

You dont have to give money to anybody.
If you want to keep some green paper, then do so on your own mind.
If you feel like giving something of your own, to those who "supposibly" need it,
then go for it, if you dont, then you dont.

You're right...the people of Iraq would rather be killed, tortured and held captive under Saddam's regime rather than make less money. Also, to the contrary, the country wasn't standing on it's own two feet. The corruption that laid beneath the surface was unimaginable and near impossible to rehabilitate. In any war innocent civilians are killed, but, sometimes invasion or war is the only medicine. Whether or not you are for the war, donating for the troops is the correct thing to do morally. Those men/women didn't start the invasion nor did they indict it, so a little here and there helps them out more than you think.

    Sick bastards...

Anywho, you're not forced to donate to charity if you don't want to. Charity is about understanding the plight of others and reaching out from your heart to help.
