There's a bit difference about these 2 words. Can = The ability. May = Permission. Page 875, do work chillun.
What about, "It may rain today." ? Whose permission did the rain get? May is actually uncertainty it just became idiomatic for permission because there's no better word.
Well, he means in the form of questions. "Can I go skating?" = Do I have the ability to skate? "May I go skating?" = Will you give me permission to go skating?
