C++ for Dummies

I'm thinking about buying the book "C++ for Dummies" and was wondering how good of a book is it?

I'm brand new to C++ and have NEVER had any experience in ANY programming whatsoever. SO yeah, I'm a newbie.

Also, I have one question. I'm sorry if it's a stupid questions, but I must ask what I must:

What kind of programming was used to make YouTube, FaceBook and MySpace?

 

I would recommend other books over it. The Dummies' books are for complete idiots that need explanations at every corner.

I recommend looking for Herbert Schildt's C++: A Beginners Guide. It takes a comprehensive look at the fundamentals, and after you're familiar with it, learning more just takes a little time and patience.

Edit: To answer your question about Youtube and Myspace etc, they were probably coded in a lot of languages. The markup-language used to display the actual page is probably a mix of HTML/XHTML and CSS. They probably use JavaScript every now and then, and definitely server-side languages such as PHP. I don't doubt they use ASP either.

You won't just read a book and be able to make award-winning software and websites. It takes time, experience, patience, and the will to learn new things, even if they take months for you to understand.

EDIT #2: Uncle Vodka, please refrain from posting useless things. What do you think happens when he googles something? It takes him either to a static page with a single opinion, or another forum with a discussion about the same thing. If you want to help him, let alone post, please make it useful and to the subject.

I can understand linking people to google for snippets of code and concepts, however this is a fairly direct question he's asking, so I think the least he deserves is a proper answer.

As for the book, I really think I may at that "complete idiotic" level as I know absolutely NOTHING about C++ :embar: I'll also look into that other book you recommended though.

 

If you find C++ too hard for your level, then there is always other languages you can get the basics with first. For example, it would probably be easier to learn Python or C# before C++. C# has a similar syntax, too. Nonetheless, give C++ a go.

If you really want to learn to make programs, don't give up. You will spend hours of work on many individual things, I remember when I was learning about 3D programming how difficult it was to get my head around the concepts at first. You require a very logical brain, and perserverance. If you find something too hard, spend a little more time trying to understand it, or skip to another thing and come back to it when you have a broader understanding.
