You see a shirt for £97, but You don't have the money, so you borrow £50 off you're Mum and £50 of you're Dad. £50+£50=£100, right? ... You buy the shirt and have £3 change, you give £1 to you're Mum, £1 to you're dad and you keep £1 to yourself.

Now you owe them both £49.

£49+£49=£98 + YOUR £1 = £99

Where is the missing £1?

The question's meant to mess with your mind, but it's not correct.

If you're totaling the debt, IE $49 to each parent = $98, you wouldn't add the $1 with that. Mathematically, you're now at $1 less. With the wording of the problem, it makes you believe that there's something missing.

 

Sanctuary is correct. There is nothing missing.

you pay off $2 making it a $98 debt. you have $1 left that you still owe.

(100-97) - 2 = 1
if you give all $3 back: (100-97) -3 = 0 there is nothing missing
