    A Tough Tech Question

Alright, So I'm wondering if there is some sort of a service that I could buy or pay monthly that it would almost act like a personal computer that I could access.
    • I could access over the Internet
    • Install any OS that I want on it
    • Maybe Install more than one OS on it, have it act like a few computers
    • Install and run any applications on it
    • Have it run pretty much 24/7

Simplified: A remote computer that I have full access to over the internet.

I don't even know if a service like this even exists, but if it does I'd appreciate someone directing me to a good provider. I'm thinking this might be something like a cloud service or VPS, but I'm not to sure.

    Thanks.

I would say no, it's not viable. You CAN access a personal computer of your own remotely-- over the internet-- using services like LogMeIn.com, and you can access local computers through LAN spying programs such as Apple's "Remote Desktop".

However, accessing computers over the internet is usually slow, laggy, not viable for gaming or anything needing rapid response or consistent connection. Additionally, the graphics are usually really downgraded to save bandwidth usage, so instead of full color, you get really low resolution images with like what... 16-bit color? Posterized images, I guess it's called.

So in short; no these sort of services don't exist yet. Logmein is the closest that I know of, but it's laggy, and should only be used to retrieve information for documents saved on your own personal desktop

the closest you'll get is a dedicated server, they have internet access, you can change your operating system depending on who you own it with, they run applications, etc... i dont think you can partition run an OS though

No just simply impossible, the closest you can get is like what everyone said above said. You just simply cannot rent a better computer on your computer, your computer's hardware cannot do better things by just simply renting a service or something.
Lets say you have a slow computer with a pentium 4 and a intergreated motherboard graphic card and only 20gb of hard drive space, it cannot run any modern application or games because it cannot handle it, is too slow, simple logic. But if there is a program like you said above existed, then this computer will be able to run any applications even though the hardware components cannot handle it and store over 80gb, the machine simply cannot handel it and it cannot happen. Hope you understand the reason why and the VERY basic logic of computer.

I could access over the Internet- You need at least acess the internet to access a service that let you access to the internet so I say impossible.
Install any OS that I want on it- Yes
Maybe Install more than one OS on it, have it act like a few computers- You could have several OS, but OS aren't systems, they are simply what runs the system, so yes on the OS, no on the computers.
Install and run any applications on it- Depends on your system
Have it run pretty much 24/7- again depends on your system

Ok. But what about cloud gaming? I've heard some really good things about it, and that would require good graphics and such.

Where would you get a dedicated server for personal use. I've seen tons, and have 2 that I pay monthly for, but they are for Website hosting only.

    Thanks for everyone's help/input. I do appreciate it! :)

Set up your own server somewhere and use that.

There is a service which offers games that are played through their computers so you need nearly no hardware at all but it requires a good internet connection.

As far as I know you can't install an OS on a new partition over the Internet at this time, maybe in 5-10 years time you can. I could be wrong though.

Definitely not that long.. Do you remember where we were 5-10 years ago? I'd say within the next 2 or 3 tops.

Thanks again everyone for the advice. I guess I'll look into a dedicated server now :)
