Sythe.org's Members of the Month competitions

Hey everyone, as you may or may not have noticed - the Community Development Team aren't running the Members of the Month competition this month.
The main reason for this is that interest is slowly declining and both views and replies are declining.

So, we need your help!

We want to know what's good about MOTM, what's bad about MOTM and what you want to see in the future regarding the competition.

I vote regularly because I think it's a brilliant opportunity for people to get known in the community, and also who to approach with questions on areas.

 

The only thing I dislike about it is after the 5th or so post...the votes afterwards may as well not even count as it just goes by follow the leader.

 

I used to but don't anymore because they just turn out to be a popularity contest if anything. I'm not bothered whether they carry on or not.

 

A way to sort both of these issues would be to have anonymous PM voting (where only the PM reciever knows who has voted for who), and we could implement that system if you think it'd work better, any thoughts on that behalf?

 

This exactly. Users just come one after the other & pretty much copy and paste the post above them to raise post count.

 

I've said to implement that about 50 different times.

 

We tried an anonymous voting through Google something, but it was just abused and the thread wasn't viewed because people weren't posting when they voted.

I'll have a look in to other methods of anonymous voting.

 

An idea I would suggest, with each vote people should state their reasoning behind why they are voting for said person.. this could weed out any "follow the leader, spam posts" Although, it might make the situation worse? I am all for the member of the month, I believe it's a great way for the community to get involved and it gives an incentive for users to get involved.. I don't see why it's in decline, personally.

 

No, I don't vote in MotM because...

1) It's just a popularity contest (as others have stated)

2) The same few people win every month, and it gets predictable and old fast

3) I still believe that the rank (and all miniranks for that matter) are useless, and people use them unfairly to their advantage in the markets.

 

I personally havnt been active enough to see a MOTM poll but now that my activity is finally increasing obviously I've finally come across it

I think it is great for the community and really allows people something to aspire too so I think it should definatley continue, but also with the suggestions that people have given like the ability for only the thread creator to see the poll results

Yeah, I vote in MotM regularly because... It's kind of achievement on sythe.org and those who are actually active get benefits (ranks / miniranks) for their activity instead of just postcount

 

I don't know any user that has member of the month titles in their threads, only member of the year, which is quite a big event which is hard to win tbh.

 

i vote in them but not like it matters its always the same people alternating every other month. kinda gets boring and not even worth the post count to fill it out.

When I resigned from mod because I was busy for 2 months, my activity was terrible (which is why I resigned) and I hardly helped anyone. But when I became mod once again I was voted a few times for being most helpful member of the month or something, which is hard to believe as I was away...
I must have just been voted because I was noticed. So it's not really accurate. (I didn't actually win the part, but the fact I was voted for says something)

 

I don't remember who it was, but I'm pretty sure I've seen a [Member of the Month][Trusted][Buying/Selling GP][etc] tags.

Yeah, I vote in MotM regularly because... i enjoy the fun it creates in Sythe, and adds some spice to the forum. Its boring without activities like this.
