Conjoining of Off Topic Sub-forums

This suggestion is specifically for Off Topic, but it may be able to be applied in other areas across the forum (I generally stick to off topic and cannot very competently comment on the activity in other forum areas.)

Basically, I think we've expanded into too many sub-forums. Sythe (or perhaps just Off Topic) is not at the activity level to support:

- General Discussion
- Something For All
- Sports, Health, and Fitness
- Cryptocurrency and Finance Discussion
- Media
-- Music
-- Movies/Television
-- Video Clips
- Technology
-- Programming
- Oculus Rift & Virtual Reality Tech


While I have no master-layout in mind, the activity in most of these sub-forums is rather low. You open one of those various sub-forums and you can see threads with a post from one, two, three plus months ago on the first page.

I realize they are differing topics, but do they really warrant their own section? If activity was greater, I would say yes, but this is not the case.

Why conjoin sections? Well, outside of the aesthetic appearance of more posts, more people frequent General Discussion and may be more inclined to post on threads they see in there opposed to going and lurking through a new sub-forum.

So yeah, input please!

 

All of the media subforums should be combined into just a general 'Media' section. Tech & programming & VR could be combined, but I imagine Richard deliberately set up the VR forum the way it is since it is a "game changer".

 

He did, he wants to get more exposure. Support for the media suggestion. Others I just don't see any logical way to reorganize them, they all have enough activity to keep. Aside from that, it'd be hard to merge or just delete them altogether.

 

I think it should be left alone for navigation purposes. If you don't count the spam forum and sandbox, there are only 4 sub forums. Not really an issue.

 

I support for certain subjects but as far as buying/selling threads are concerned I do no support. This is because joining these threads would make it harder for users to find the goods/services they may need. For everything else, I certainly agree!

 

The whole media section is so dead..

 

Support as always. Getting these things changed is a pain in the ass since you basically have to point guns at people's faces but it's doable if you really give it a shot.

 

I support as well, there are a lot of sub-forums with little to no activity. And then there are sub-forums that don't exist that need to because the entire site is flooded with posts about them such as a Dota 2 forum. *cough*cough*

Note: JK nobody loves Dota

 

I love dota but yes i feel the exact same way

 

I propose removing the programming sub-section and just combining it into technology. Oculus rift should be removed altogether. 8 threads in a month and a half is terrible. The sub-sections for media could be removed too potentially.

 

Had it been nurtured like new sections should be, I think it could've been quite good =@

Granted that was before we added Finance

 

IMO,

All of the media should be joined together.
General discussion, Something for All and Cryptocurrency + Finance discussion should be joined together.

 

Here's what I'd do:

Reasoning:
- Renaming Something For All would give it more exposure to new users and make the idea more clear
- Sports and crypto can totally be merged into general to stimulate that section since it's pretty dead atm, same with media (absolutely no need for all those subforums)
- Tech is relatively active on its own so it should stick around
- I understand Bic Rich wants to expand and have a section for VR but everyone knows that's a dead end as its own section

 

All of them fit under the "General" part of "General Discussion"

 

Disagree imo. Sports and crypto discussion are completely unrelated, and thus should remain separate. The media section is should stay separate, but should be combined into one section. I think that is the only section needing to be condensed.

 

At least turn media into just one section please
