Is the existence of God necessary?

Before we start, I just want to say this post is not debating about religion, I know everyone here loves bashing Christianity, but please pointless bashing as much as possible.

"If God does not exist, objective moral values and duties do not exist.

Objective moral values and duties do exist.

    Therefore, God exists."

Back before I was a agnostic theist and was still a Atheist, one of my main arguments against religion was that a person should not do good based on the fact that you should do good to go to heaven, but you should do good purely out of a good heart and the betterment of humanity.

However after studying several topics including Anthropocentrism, Heidegger and several other critical arguments, the question of what exactly is the 'Good' that we call. Well what makes someone good? Well good..is just...good? Questioning the backbone of human morality is just the start.

After a while you will realize that the concept of 'Good' and 'Evil' is all social constructions. You can just imagine, back when the first society was just formed and lying was a huge issue and nobody liked to be lied too, nobody liked to live in the constant reminder that what they know could be a lie, so even lier themselves hated being lied to. Soon lying become a 'Evil', because the society deemed so. And this applies to stuff like murder.

Evil in one society may just be good in another society, certain tribes on Earth are examples of that. If 'Good' aren't really 'Good' and are just purely social constructions, then why do we follow them? Well to keep order! So why do we need to keep order? So that we can keep doing good?

Can anyone answer this paradox? Not really, but lets suppose there is a absolute power out there that demands certain things from us, then that will give society a reason to follow a certain behavior and remain functioning.
So what do you think? Just some food for thought.....

Is the existence of God necessary?

I find its necessary as it answers questions that most (if not all of us) can't answer. Questions about hereafter and the creation of the world and what not.

The existence of morality is not a result of god.
I've read Heidegger extensively, and he is not an argument for religion in the slightest.

I can't work out what your actual question is. What do I think about what? God's existence? Moral relativity? Cultural relativity? Good and evil? Why humans act the way they do?

Could you be a little more clear please?

This please. Also I'd like to say that people here tend to say shit about other religions being them the ones who don't respect others. But whatever, even if I am not christian I don't like the way ppl treat others who believe in something. Just my 2 cents there.

Is the existence of God necessary?

There is nothing either good or bad but thinking makes it so. /Shakespeare
I'd like to ask a counter question actually, what is definition of your 'God' thought?
God is described as creator of universe and supernatural existence which controls us and knows everything, and immortal and invincible.

I accept the God as creator of universe, but i don't accept the rest.
In my definition, basicly, i think that the small particle which exploded and created universe can be called as 'God'.

But i still stand with Shakespeare

Is the existence of God necessary?

I think you skimmed over my long paragraphs a bit too quick :p, my mention about Heidegger wasn't a argument for or against anything. And I explained that morality is not a result of god, but our society, and god is the only justification we have for our morales.

    See above

I like to think God as a infinite being, if that small particle which exploded was not infinite and the universe is not infinite, then I would say the world is godless.

The bible was written by man to aspire fear and promote order. We don't know if a God even exists, so why would one be necessary?

Morals can't fall from the sky, nor is it tangible. It's pretty obvious that societies within these cultures created their own set of morals. Some cultures directly/indirectly use God to force these ethics. It's proven to be effective, otherwise the world would be in more chaos than it already is.

Is the existence of God necessary?

Are you trying to say that if God exists, morals exists, and since morals exists therefore God exists? That is the most typical affirming the consequent fallacy you will get.

Also, saying that our morals come from society presupposes moral relativity, a claim that you haven't justified. Also, saying that God is the only justification for our morals is an assertion without basis.

I think that this is just stupid, I mean people have different thoughts of things and thinking that their minds will change to the opposite is quite stupid. Just stop doing this kind of threads where all just argue about why god exists or why he doesn't. I don't really care if he does exist or not but I hate how people go mad if some Christian says that he believes in God and the "non-beliavable" people jump at him with "OH YOU'RE AN HYPOCRITE because HE DOESN'T EXIST". Well they've been taught like this and you won't change their beliefs whether you argue with them or not, it won't make anything happen. This happened in my school with several people and I was always mad at this kind of "shit" where all just argue because of their beliefs. I don't give a fuck if you're Christian, Hebrew, Atheist, Muslim or any other shit. If you respect me, i'll respect you. That's what i've been taught by my father and my mother, whose I love with the bottom of my heart and whose taught me the manners that I actually have.

Is the existence of God necessary?

Bullshit. This is a homework/uni assignment you're doing - I've been given this before. If not, I'm being a callous asshole, sorry ;)

    If you're doing logic:

    A
    B
    ->
    C

Then if both A and B are true, then C is true. This is sound logic.

However, A (imo) isn't necessarily true.

    So:

    ¬A
    B
    ->
    ¬C

If this is a philosophy question, what you're asking is the god/morals paradox.

Does morality exist outside of god?

If you think yes, how is this possible? Is morality some sort of constant that is not a part of the universe? Is it quantifiable in any way? Did God create morality? (see next if you think so).

If you think no, does that mean that whatever god deems as 'good' is good? Could rape and murder be deemed good if god was warlike and destructive?

IMO god is not necessary for morality as I'm of the opinion it's subjective. Just my two cents, apology for the ramble.

Is the existence of God necessary?

So, based on your argument, do you believe there is objective morality within each religion? Isn't it open to interpretation and used in many different ways, therefore subjectively?

I think that some entity must have created the universe. Who created that entity, however, is up to anyone.

To keep order within society and have morals, I think yes. Without a God, there would be no need to do good deeds that put others before you if these acts turn out to be completely pointless. There would be no reason to do whatever we do, if that makes any sense.

Is the existence of God necessary?

When you're defining "good" and "bad" in a context like this -- that is to say, in the context of being objective -- you must understand that good and bad may be perceived differently by different individuals, but using logic and common sense here can provide us with a functional definition. That is, if anything is to be deemed "good", it must facilitate a beneficial effect, idea or action. So, then, for something to be deemed "bad", it must facilitate a detrimental effect, idea or action. Of course this is assuming the standard dictionary definitions of beneficial and detrimental.

    Beneficial
    [ben-uh-fish-uh l]
    adjective
    1.
    conferring benefit; advantageous; helpful

    Detrimental
    [de-truh-men-tl]
    adjective
    1.
    causing detriment; damaging; harmful

Is the existence of God necessary?

"The Big Bang didn't require anything to make it happen!" (Well, then couldn't the same be true for God?)

"The Big Bang couldn't have happened without something to cause it! Ie God!" (Well, then didn't God require something to create it?)

That argument doesn't really go anywhere, both points of view are antithesis to eachother.

Is the existence of God necessary?

What caused The Big Bang was an infinitely dense infinitesimal point in space. This was the state of the universe at time t=0, over 13 billion years ago. At time t=0, this infinitely dense point in space began an unprecedented inflation -- it basically exploded outward. This was the birth of the universe we know today.

But that would be incorrect. See above.
