Evacuate Earth.

I watched this awesome National Geo documentary on what if earth was in danger and he HAD to evacuate , this situation could come if a sun were to explode causing meteors and other objects to come flying towards earth, (all explained in documentary). Would we be able to evacuate everyone? this documentary answers amazing questions,

How would we get away?
Who gets to leave in the ship we build?

They explain the obvious we would not be able to bring everyone but only a selected few who have close to perfect features of a human. Like no dissabilities or sickness.



This documentary is just amazing! I watched the entire 1 hour and 30 minutes just pure interest. They explain this awesome ship that was thought up by Gerard o'neil its a ship with thise circular thing around a cylinder shaped ship. it that creates gravity inside the ship i have a few pics i can show you guys its really amazing. It could hold like a few hundred thousand people.

ALSO this ship would be propelled by mini nukes that would cause force to push the ship at intense speeds close to the speed of light.



















UPDATE: i just watched the movie " Elysium" they actually used this ! the pictures i posted they based elysium of of it i thought that was really cool!

If the sun exploded wouldn't everything be over anyway?

 

Nothing would grow without a sun, why evacuate?

 

The sun would never go nova, it will become a red giant and then a white dwarf. But that isn't for another 4 billion years, and the sun isn't set to end all terrestrial life until a billion years from now either.

The next question is: what else can endanger all life on earth? The only immediate dangers would be super-volcanoes, and meteors. Since super volcanoes are at present time, completely unpredictable phenomena, that's kind of pointless. And if we can have ships sustain us, we can move meteors off of a direct path. In fact we've got a better idea on how to do the latter than the former.

Also, since we're assuming that a ship could sustain a human population for any amount of time, we also have to assume that we can inhabit other worlds. Ie. aerostat cities on venus, cities on the moon, bases on mars, drilling operations on Ceres, etc... Meaning that any single event would not be catastrophic to the entire human race anyways.

Save for a blackhole eating us up or something.


Edit: I watched a few minutes of the video, and their explanation is sooooooooo incredibly unlikely. I mean what do you think the chances are of a normal star colliding with us, let alone a 10 km object that has absolutely nothing to do with our solar system?

We would be able to go outside our galaxy to another planet hopefully and even then there are many dangers like the chemicals in the air and stuff but its a possibility

 

Can you prove there is more then one "sun"? Also, you should really learn some respect just because we mis understood doesn't make us stupid.

 

Sun is a star... there are an estimated 10^11 stars in our galaxy ... and there are an estimated 10^11 galaxies. in the universe... so there are approx 10^22 stars or suns in the universe
i.e. 10000000000000000000000 stars in the universe..

and i would expect you to actually watch the video itself before replying.. sorry didn't mean any offense.

There's no way we would be able to move the entire population of the Earth to another planet. Its just not possible. Maybe in the future.

The other problem would be moving. Where would we move to? Mars has been predicted not to be habitable until the sun expands some more. If a star or something impossible to stop is going to hit Earth, all we could is pray to be honest.

 

Yeh no idea why elena asked if there's more then 1 star...

1) the documentary says we wouldn't be able to move everyone maybe a quarter of a million people at most.

2) We would move to somewhere outside our galaxy , possibly another habitable planet. and i say outside our galaxy because if a start did explode it would destroy our entire galaxy so the only choice would be to move outside our galaxy.

 

Don't fucking call other stars suns. OUR star is called the Sun, it is its NAME. It is not terminology for a STAR.

Holy shit, what? You have absolutely no clue what you're talking about. We can't even manage interplanetary human travel yet, let alone interstellar and sure as hell not intergalactic.
You seem to not understand the distances involved here, especially since you think a star going supernova would destroy much beyond its planetary system. The only thing that can sterilize a galaxy is a massive energy ejection from a supermassive black hole.

If you're going to try to start a conversation about anything involving space at least attempt to grasp a basic understanding on it.

 

The sun and stars are named differently for a reason. Which is why i said the two different names. So that's why.

 

Guys, try and keep it a bit more civil. If someone says something that is wrong, don't call them stupid etc. Just show them why/how they are wrong and carry on with your point.

 

Maybe if your ass actually watched the entire documentary before starting arguments like a idiot ... i'm not even going to bother replying to you after this , watch the documentary and then you can argue about anything you want. They explain the distances of traveling and how we can achieve it..

 

It is cool in theory but I doubt we will EVER be able to pull something like that off. There are far too many things that can go wrong, mainly assembling something that large and having it work for almost 100 years. On top of that they would have to put up with people who aren't eligible trying to sabotage the project. Even if we became smart enough to do this, we don't even know for sure our "destination" can support us. It is like a large gamble for every facet. Also whats to stop terrorism within the spaceship? Over 80 or so years i'm sure there is going to be some jackass that tries to do something stupid.

Humans will probably be at the point where we are already sustaining life on other planets before anything like this happens.

 

They legit ANSWERED EVERY SINGLE QUESTION YOU HAD in the vid.. why are people not watching the video before posting :'(
They talk about accembling it and in the video the first ship even gets destroyed , they talk about sabotage and the deal with it, and they talk about if destination can't support us and what to do, Please watch before replying i don't want to sound rude but im getting annoyed by ther fact that 100% of people that replied to this thread came up with some paragraph of a reply without even watching 30 minutes of the documentary.

 

I watched it all. It is basically a fantasy. They even say in the documentary that everything is pretty much impossible lol.

 

Thanks for watching it :/ , everyone else pretty much wrote me paragraph after paragraph with arguments without even knowing whats said in the documentary but it was aweseome the whole idea , the scenereo of evacuation earth i loved it

 

Yeah it was pretty interesting. Any idea how they planned on landing on the new planet? I don't think it was mentioned.

 

Listen, I don't need to watch that one documentary to know the sciences behind what I'm talking about and the theories you're putting forth. If you can't explain your stance without relying on such a crutch, then you shouldn't be arguing these points anyways.

Well, conventional methods of human landing (landing in water) wouldn't work for a couple reasons:

One: You're not just crash landing a small squad, you're landing a ton of people.

Two: Water landings require outside help to be successful.

The best would be landing on...well... land. But we don't exactly have that technology ready yet.

We are however working on it!

 

By the time we could even fathom this type of achievement the technology and scientific understanding would be entirely different.

In terms of actual science Artificial intelligence is closer than outer-solar system travel.
