Runescape Parody In The Making - Fan Made 3D Fps

Hello everyone,

Not many of you will know me, I've been viewing the Sythe forums for quite a while but very rarely post.

Today however, is different. As a runescape veteran I developed a keen interest in game development, I have since been working with 3d programs such as blender and sketchup, and dev consoles like unity.

I have decided to make a first person shooter, using a recreated map of Edgeville, the Grand Exchange and the Wilderness (or parts thereof)

I'm doing this as a hobby, with absolutely no expectation of revenue of any kind. I will be commencing study next year and view this project as a way to build upon my skills before I enter University.

The plan is pretty straight forward, develop the game in unity using assets created in various other programs, use existing scripts and basic character controls etc. Basically, the game will be browser based - meaning no downloads of any kid.

I would like to clarify that this will not be a private server. Other then the map, the game will have virtually nothing to do with runescape. There will even be an option to play as a guest.

As far as legalities go, if JaGex requests that I stop development, I will. Avoiding legal problem is my #1 priority.

I will be contacting JaGex within the next few days and provide a detailed project overview, I will state that the game will not generate profit, it will be add free and will link back to the RuneScape homepage.

Enough of that, here are some images from the early stage.

To ensure everything is to scale, an image is used as a blueprint guide.


Once the basic blueprints were done, I started on the terrain.


Using contours, I am able to get a reasonably accurate environment.


After the difficult part of the terrain is done, I've started on the building. Pictured: Edgeville bank.


After filling the terrain and raising the basic structures, you can start to recognize Edgevill.

UPDATE Added some basic flat colors to give you a greater idea of where everything is. You can see the outline of the GE on the right, I'll be getting to work on it after Edgeville.

UPDATE You may have noticed that a lot of the walls in runescape are not flat. I have decided to stay true to the design and add the extruded detail on the buildings. An example below:


I am aware that it doesn't look like much, but when everything is textured and lighting effects are added, you'll be surprised.

I am also aware that some of the structures that are pictured on the runescape map above are different in game, this issue has been fixed.

The whole point of this project is to create something from suggestions that come from the runescape community. I am posting this on a few of the biggest fan sites I can think of, so if you have an idea, please share it.

When I say suggestions, I'm referring to game content. Being a first person shooter there will need to be additional objects to hide behind.
It wouldn't be very realistic to heal yourself by eating a shark either, so anything you think may work, let me know.

Did I mention that in my game, you'll be able to look up?

Your thoughts would be very much appreciated, questions and criticism very welcome.

 

Its a runescape parody, I think that eating a shark to heal yourself would be AWESOME haha.

This is a really cool concept, I hope you go somewhere with this!

Perhaps you're right, it would be hilarious to eat a shark in the middle of a fire fight. If I were to go in that direction, the eating emote would be similar to when you eat something in minecraft.

I guess I should make it as silly as possible, I'm 90% sure I'm going with your suggestion

Because the game is simple in nature, no cut scenes or over the top graphics, I should be finished within a few months

 

good luck, this is a reall good idea which engine are you using for it? doom 3 engine would look sexy

I'll be using unity. It's an easy program to use and is exelent for creating stand alones.

And another reason is because unity reacts with custom assets much better than the doom engine. Especially when you're using pre textured .fbx

The software I'm using allows me to drag and drop an image into the canvas, it then becomes a component so all I have to do is use the line tool to trace the edges of the buildings and terrain. In the picture I've then lowered the map on the blue axes and then panned the camera down and to the left, centralized on the component.

 

This looks real cool, you really should keep us posted on this. Gonna have some fun when you finish!

 

Dude... This is gonna be amazing. Great idea! We all have been looking for a fun new twist to RS (at least I have). Keep it up!

 

I will try to update with new content at least 3 or 4 times a week.

I think people will enjoy it simply to walk through parts of RS in first person.

The guns could be bows/crossbows/shield bows. Perhaps you could have various potions as powerups, strength potions for firearm powerups like faster fire rate, defense potions for body armor or damage resistance and attack potions for ...weapon upgrades? Perhaps an attack potion could temporarily give you a shot gun effect.

If that is possible.

I would also love to see a small ardougne map focused around the marketplace with various additional stalls to hide behind.

There could be a red team and a blue team each wearing the corresponding partyhat or h'ween mask.

I'll try come up with some more ideas haha.

Edit: and I think the shark eating idea is hilarious and grand.

I like the idea of a crossbow, I'll be avoiding using swords or magic of any kind. Well for now anyway. Thanks for the feedback.

I've seen this before, the difference between what I'm doing and what he has done revolves around the engine. He is using runescapes actual engine and the actual runescape assets in his game, while implementing his own character controls, weapon scripts etc.

I think what he has done is very clever but even as he admits, the engine is simply not flexible enough to provide a seamless gaming experience. Unity recognizes java and if it were my intention, I could go in the same direction but if I did I leave myself open to legal issues (using the runescape engine and its assets breaches copyright laws) and I want to avoid legal issues at all costs.

Basically, the whole point is to make a serious FPS from scratch while adding silly runescape maps and themes.

I really want the ability to change the environment on a large scale in some parts and a small scale in others. This is much easier to do when you start from scratch.

Thinking the next content update will be Thursday, I'd rather have a decent amount of new pics each update then 1 or 2

Not sure that a furnace is the best place for a ladder, but there will be an underground area, similar to where the Chaos Druids are.
