    This is a fascinating example of how exotic and clever exploits can be.

    This guy performs a code injection and instruction pointer re-targeting / execution of his injected code without any mods or debug equipment. Just moving mario around and killing coopers in a particular way was all that he needed to do to set the bits he wanted.

    Isn't the hacking made less fascinating by the fact the game is so old though?

    I'm not a tech guy, but it seems to me from the video that it'd be a lot more impressive to hack/cheat/exploit a more modern game vs an ancient game.

    While its still impressive(I could never do it), It just seems it'd be a lot more amazing if something like this was done on more modern games with more modern code?

    Old cart games have a particular resistance to being hacked in that they live mostly on ROM. Defacto code execution prevention. Modern games usually employ scripting languages to run internal game events, such as lua. So hacking a modern game is probably generally speaking easier. All you need to do is figure out a way to inject your script.

    Carried out by putting a snippet of code over the license plate.

    Same guy also wrote a neural network using genetic algorithms to play Mario called MarI/O. It's really cool how it learned to play.
