Lack of motivation at highly competitive school

    Hello all,

I attend a very competitive engineering school in the west. Basically, all I need is some help getting myself put back together and helping me finish the year off strong. My GPA is fairly low, but so is the majority at this school. I found myself sleeping in past classes 90% of the time, even when my classes start around 11am. I sleep in until at least noon every day and I still feel tired when I wake up. I am prescribed adderall but I don't like taking it because I can't eat anything when I do.

    Any suggestions?
    Thanks in advance.

Hey man, I completely get that feeling like you do, it's like you're tired all the time and it's deep down in your bones no matter how much you rest and that makes you feel like you're too tired to do anything at all.

You haven't mentioned your sleeping habits at night but you might want to look into that. But as I've found, if you're experiencing anxiety and if you're anything similar to how much of an over-thinker I am, it's hard to rest when you have things to accomplish but do not have the energy to.

Here's what I used to do, take a day off or two. Spoil yourself and do something you're particularly chill with doing, relax and ignore every single goddamn responsibility in your life for that day, but after the day is over, instill into yourself that it's crunch time. After five days of doing that, you get your rest day again. It's a never ending cycle of work > reward for yourself. It worked for me at least, I graduated university just fine on one of the top universities in my country.

A few more tips? Don't have your mobile phone anywhere near your bed when you are going to sleep- it's a difficult habit to break but you have to try. A cup of coffee plus an apple would better than slamming three cups of coffee w/ 3 shots of espresso each in the morning. Avoid energy drinks for god's sake, it's okay a couple times when you really need this overnight crunch time but don't drown on it. If you're not the exercising kind of person, stretch your muscles while you shower (I usually do the hand/wrist stretch thing personally in the shower because I write and type a lot), but stretching eases a lot of muscle tension and you'll find it's easier to work on things when your shoulders are as loose as they can be.

Most of all, at the end of the day when you've accomplished something or lacked in accomplishing something, remember you are currently building what YOUR future looks like.
