Tips for Medical student dealing with stress at University

Hello guys, my name is James and I'm a 3rd year student at the University of Queensland studying Medicine. Need some tips to reduce stress, I know this might sound stupid but i seem to suffer from stress and anxiety since I started Medical school in 2011. Please contribute ways to reduce my stress levels without prescribed medication as this would be the last resort. I also suffer from social anxiety so socializing hasn't been something I don't really participate in. Fellow classmates who also are studying Medicine at the same University seem to have the same problem, even including Engineering students. I seem to be in a black hole of stress due to the workload.

You can get into fitness. This relieves your stress momentarily depending on the weight.

If you look better, you feel better. Fitness also boosts your self-esteem, this should help you with your socializing problems.

Thank you, i've tried going to the everyday fitness gym close to me. And people seem very judgmental on my workout session. I stopped after my first day as people stared at me.

I see. Plan a workout regiment ahead of time so you aren't walking around like a zombie. There is nothing you can do about others being judgmental as we all are. Listening to music is the best way to suppress your surroundings, allowing you to focus and do what you have to do.

After going to the gym regularly you will notice a significant difference in confidence as you are working out.

I support the exercise motive. Also realize that what other people think about your exercise regimen does not matter. You'll probably never talk to those people, and if they make a comment, you can flip it on its head by saying "Yeah, I'm new, care to give me a few tips?" or something if it comes to that. My additional advice would be to try to eat and sleep well and regularly; don't skip meals or sleep in till 11 if that's not what you normally do. Having a healthy body and healthy mind will get you through a lot more than most people realize. Good luck; keep us posted.

People generally stare. No matter what you are doing. Doesn't necessarily mean you are doing something wrong. If you are worried about that, do some research on how to workout properly. If you are worried about them staring because of your body, they probably aren't. Personally when I see a new scrawny guy in the gym trying I respect them.

Light a spliff, it really helps to focus on things, and stress goes away.

If you don't mind me asking what type of medicine are you studying? As for stress the only thing I can recommend is alcohol lol. I know you said your not a social person but alcohol might open you up and make you love partying on the weekend.

go for a jog. seriously, buy good running shoes, and go and run. there's nothing better to clear your head. especially if you go for a late night jog. gym membership is a cool idea too. it's tough to get started and you might feel completely out of place at first but just keep at it.

Exercise helps. Dont worry about people staring at the gym but make sure you're using correct form if you do plan on going. Cardio is fun too. I just plug in my earphones and run through a local park. Just me, my dog, and my thoughts. I can go out for hours, The feeling you get after working out is incredible as well.
