About God

Is it bad to be an atheist or agnostic? My parents are religious Christian but I don't know what to do, should I tell them that I don't want to join the religion as I am not sure if God exists or should I just keep it as a secret since I don't really go to the church and they accepted it that I don't want to go there but I'm just afraid to tell them that I am agnostic..

Should I just keep it as a secret until I get the chance to tell them in the right time and I am also sure that my Dad wouldn't have a big reaction to this if I ever tell them as he accept things easier than my Mom and I am pretty sure that my Mom would blame the internet again as I am remember when I was 7 yrs old and I played a blood-n-gore game called Skull Kid and I showed it to my mom when I was about to kill the boss and it's pretty gross and she took away my computer for a few months..

So a while ago, me and my mom was talking about God and religion while eating our breakfast and I told her that I'm not going to join the religion when I reach 18 or 20 as that's what most people these days gets baptism (if you know what I'm trying to say) and she didn't go like "OMFG ARE YOU FREAKING KIDDING ME?!" she's just like "Okay, maybe you can join in the right time when you can really understand it" and I was like "okay".

Maybe I shouldn't label my self as a agnostic or atheist maybe I'll just tell them that I don't want to join the religion and go to the church as there are more problems to be worried about other than God (I'm sorry if some of you gets butthurt with this) and tell them that sorry, they can't force me to believe into something that I don't want to believe as that's what the minister of our religion said, just let those people believe.

 

can't tell if this is a troll, if not then tell them straight up that you don't believe theres a man in the sky controlling everything that goes on in the world and forgiving people of their wrongdoings.
IMO religions and different faiths were made up to make people feel better about themselves and give people something to follow and be a part of.
If there was an omnipotent and omniscient presence then there would be some kind of proof, and all the shit that goes on in the world wouldn't go on.

 

My family is catholic/christian, I didn't used to be religious and was always curious about whether God exists or not. I reverted to Islam/studied it for quite a while and finally decided to become Muslim last year, my life quality has increased a lot and have overall become a much better human being in general. A lot of people would think why Islam? I studied all religions in totality and I'm big on science, the Quran's scientific facts and beliefs I already had prior to becoming Muslim was just perfect for /me/. Don't follow what we are taught by the "elite" and don't be another one of the "masses" study and experience things for yourself, don't be scared to be hated or criticized about what you believe. Inb4 some angry ignorant idiot comes talking trash about Islam *popcorn is ready*

 

It is not bad to be an agnostic or atheist, if you truly believe that God isn't real then you shouldn't act like you believe in him just to conform your parents. That doesn't mean you should be disrespectful and insult their religion. Just explain them that you don't have a problem with it but would rather not be involved. As long as they don't force you to go to church and you don't challenge their believes everything should be fine. I am an atheist myself.

I think you sort-of answered your own question. Do you think she will ever bring up the question again? If she does you can tell like she said, join at the right time when you understand it. You can keep blowing it off or just say you just don't interest at this time. And yes Skull Kid is wild game haha!

 

Haha you know that game too? First played it when I was and it's really a very wild game.

 

Personally I wouldn't mention it. I consider myself an atheist (well, an empiricist really) but I know it would really bother my christian parents if I mentioned it. I just avoid the topic and duck out of going to church these days, that might be a better route for you. No real reason to confront them unless you're sure it'll be of some benefit. I mean, some parents will respond to that by sending you to church more often or setting up a meeting with your pastor or shoving you in a youth group lol.

Honestly no matter what your religious beliefs are faith is something you have to do on your own regardless only you know if you believe or not so if you chose to declare yourself an atheist then make sure in your heart that's what you want to be 100%.

 

I am not even so sure of it and not "atheist", let's say "agnostic".

In my heart, I still do believe that God exist but I just don't want to be religious like not going to church. My parents do understand that I don't want to go to church so I think it's easier for them to understand that I'm not religious and I don't want to be a member of my parents' religion.

 

Going to church doesn't make you religious. Religion and faith aren't the same things. Religion is man made, and faith is what you believe in your heart.

 

I tell my parents that i don't believe in god. They get mad at me and tell me i won't be in heaven with them. The reality is, i refuse to be born into a religion, and just because my parents are christian, does not mean i should be. I have no knowledge on god, so therefore he is not in my interest. I'm not saying i wouldn't believe in him, but i just haven't had any motivation to look into it.

 

Yep, I hate that " i won't be in heaven with them.", that's just bullshit. I just don't want to spend the most of my time to God and Religion as life is short and I think what matters is that you have a good moral and integrity.
