    Gambling addiction

I recently started online gambling with small bets and everything was fine for few months but now within 2 - 3 months I have noticed that this has became an addiction to me and its just really hard to stop playing even when I try to do everything to prevent it. Bets have increased and I have probably lost like 600 - 800€ in total and this is quite large amount of money to me as a student with really low income.

I'm so ashamed and now I even blocked all gambling sites to prevent any further gambling, but is there more I can do? I really would want an permanent solution to this, even told my girlfriend that I have a gambling problem even though it was hard to admit.

It hurts so much when I think about all of that money I could have spent on something useful but I'm trying to be positive.

If anyone else has gambling addiction I know how bad it feels, be strong and try your best not to gamble!

Don't gamble. Try to avoid any form of gambling. That is pretty much all you can do.

Been there, done that. Feeling the urge to gamble is completely normal. I went through what you're going through now so I know the feeling. I was a big time staker/dicer on RS and ended up losing bils due to gambling. There isn't a single perfect solution to quitting gambling, but you may want try the following (they worked for me):

Do something else. Distract yourself with another activity, such as cleaning your house, going to the gym, or watching a movie.

Postpone gambling. Tell yourself that you’ll wait five minutes, fifteen minutes, or an hour — however long you think you can hold out. As you wait, the urge to gamble may pass or become weak enough to resist.

Give yourself a reality check. Visualize what will happen if you give in to the urge to gamble. Think about how you’ll feel after all your money is gone and you’ve disappointed yourself and your family.

Sometimes the only way to learn is to go too far. Think about what all that money could've got you, and how much different your life could be. Don't be the one that goes too far and ends up bankrupt because of it.

Okay, this is coming from a Las Vegas local who is of age to gamble.

I have buddies that gamble money, etc.

Some do it just out of boredom, the excitement, and I see nothing wrong with that. But you can ONLY bet what you're willing to lose. If you don't have expendable money, you then have a problem.

Ways to learn: By hitting rock bottom, probably the most effective. Realizing you have nothing, all because of yourself. Self-control is the main key here, there's no reason to gamble away money you can't lose.

    Just plain and simple, stop.

I used to gamble a decent amount and I almost have a breakdown when I've notice I almost lost all my money so that's when I stopped. The only solution that I've found is to just stop and move on. I've always have the urge to want to play at times but I just tell myself that chances are that I'll lose and I'm on a super tight budget. I still kinda gamble but only gamble a max of $5 if I have the money to spare.

Just tell yourself that there are more useful and productive things to do in life than gamble, and that gambling usually ends up doing more harm than good. Especially if u keep gambling the urge will just become stronger, so its good that u stop early, before it becomes too late. I wish u all the best man and really hope u can stop :) Also, one good way is to admit your problems which you have already done. Its better to seek help then face it alone.

Set yourself a limit if you are going to gamble. One of my friends used to gamble online and I told him about sports. Now he doesn't gamble anymore and plays basketball with me. My best suggestion is to get involved in a outside activity.

I agree with the idea of trying to get involved with something else, whether it's a sport, writing, whatever, just try to get hooked on something healthy. I also believe that it helps to first think about the "what if." Think to yourself before sitting down to gamble "am I going to break down and become depressed and hate myself if I lose this $100?" If the answer is anything remotely close to "yes" then you know you shouldn't do it. Like someone stated above, only gamble what you are absolutely willing to lose! Good luck!

Get rid of your computer if it's online gambling, move somewhere rural if it's IRL Casino Gambling. That'd pretty much solve your problem.

i spent tons of my money on soulsplit and runescape staking. i lost it all in the end, and i always do. but you do it for the rush, and the chance of winning. Its sad to look back and be like 'damn, i had 300b on soulsplit, thats like 1k right now, damn.' and you get sad. Gambling never pays off, unless your in the 5% who have self control. Online or in real life. Limit yourself, or cut yourself off.

the addiction part is because you want more money, and you crave the feeling you can get rich overnight IF you get lucky, and that's a big if. you have to realize you're losing overall and it's not worth it.

also, take your loses and run. stop thinking about it. yeah, it's a lot but always remember it could be worse. people lose millions, their houses, cars, etc. remember it could be a few thousand.

This. Been there done that, not exactly bankrupt but far enough to the point where I was skipping bill payments and payments to my parents for money they kindly lent me for a house bond. Got myself far enough into the shit to have to start from scratch all over again, trust me it's obviously not worth it.

There's not alot you can do to avoid it except to overcome it, helplines etc may help but if you have the same mindset as I have then it is a lost cause. Roary has basically hit the nail on the head. Good luck to you though, im sure you will figure it out!

Learn the math behind how gambling actually works. Realize that you will never, absolutely never, come out ahead in the longrun without odds. If you truly do love gambling, then put the odds in your favor. Go get a really good education and work for some place on wall street or wherever. Best part is, people will call you an "investor" instead of a gambler. Sounds nice yeah?

I'm being serious. Once you learn how gambling truly works, you will probably never want to gamble against the odds again. But if, in the process of learning how it works, you really start to enjoy putting the odds in your favor, then look into a wall street style sort of job. It'll be fun.
