So I just finished the final episode of Lost yesterday and boy was it disappointing. I'd heard that the ending was terrible, but I didn't believe it would be that bad.

The first season was near perfect with compelling mysteries, but every season after seemed to derail further and further and the show became a confusing mess of unfinished ideas and red herring mysteries.

Has anyone had a similar experience?

I wasn't thrilled with the ending, but after reading some websites clarifying the ending, I was happier. All of the unanswered ideas and red herring mysteries that weren't described really pissed me off though. That's just lazy

I loved Lost, still do. I finished it all years ago. You are right though, I hated the finale, and even so a handful of the pre-finale episodes in the last season.

What annoyed me is how the build up was left open to interpretation, and that the climax of what could have been was severely shot down. I would still say all in all it lists as one of my favourite series ever, but it could have been omnipotent if the last few episodes were done and scripted better.

They weren't dead, I don't believe. I believe the flash-sideways sideline was a post-death existence, but the Island itself was still "real-life". I especially believe this because the creators stated time and time again that the island was not any form of hell or purgatory, and that they weren't dead on the Island (I would have to do some digging for sources, but I'm 85 percent sure I remember them saying this). At the finale, they were all dead, but an unspecified amount of time had passed since the island, since characters such as Sawyer were still alive in the normal timeline.
