[CDT]Signature of the Month?

Some CDT members are looking at bringing back SOTM, We are looking for feedback from the community about topics like:


-Feedback from previous SOTM's, what you would change.
-If you would participate
-Do you think it would be beneficial to split in two groups? [such as new/experienced groups]
-What do you think would be a fair reward for SOTM? (miniranks, Rsgp reward, ect)
-Any other possible feedback

I wouldn't participate because tags aren't really my thing but would love to see it come back.

 

Previous entries encompassed anything you could have in a .png file whether it be 3d text drawing or tags.



We were also thinking of allowing animated pieces.

The problem was the inconsistency and theme selection of the previous SOTM(s). Not many people do tags or drawings, essentially making sotm typography dominant, which then leads to redundancy and favoritism ("this person made me this so i will vote for them"). This wouldn't work here effectively.

There was 73 voters in total in the last SOTM, and even if a single person voted for the person who made them the piece of graphics, it would hardly make a difference to the results.

 

A lot of those voters are currently banned, so even a few votes could have a difference. Take someone like Ayy for example. They make typography for many different users, and if one of those same users happen to come across the voting stage, it's very possible that they would vote for him. It's not a highly significant issue, but it's still a problem, and has been with past sotm(s). Impaired judgment is just one of many issues with this.

List of anticipated issues:

1. Lack of participants
2. Lack of participants experienced with other art niches (Tags/Drawing)
3. Redundancy in themes
4. Deterring rewards
5. Inconsistency

Not trying to be a negative nancy, but there is a reason why SOTM has been an on and off thing for many years. It's thrives in being unsuccessful.

Obviously before we move forward we would like to fix any issues that SOTM had before.

 

Yeah of course. If you could marginalize the errors with the way the current system works (assuming you're following it) then it could be decent.

I find that there's one problem in any voting situation. People go see the results of the votes in order to help them make a decision.

For example, if a signature has 15 votes and the other has 2 votes, the user will most likely vote for the one of 15 votes Because he thinks : well.. I guess the one with 2 votes isnt as good since people dont like it.

The only thing we could do to fix that is have an option to hide the results but I dont think its possible.

So we'll have to live with it

Ps: Not all people do that but theres certainly people doing that. Its pretty much called peer pressure but indirectly.

 

I'd love the opportunity to try and win competition winner.
However, i don't like the idea of tag's.
If it involved drawing. I'd be the first.

 

I don't do signatures/gfx myself as I don't have photoshop, but I'd love to see the results

 

Reading through that topic, it seems to be a general consensus that people who know about SOTW/SOTM competitions from other forums agree that tags are better to have than typography, and myself agree. That being said, I definitely mean no disrespect on those who specialize in text-based signatures; I can't be bothered to learn how to make them and some of them looks really cool imo, keep on doing you . I like the concept of having split-categories; many graphics-central forums do split their competitions (i.e. tag of the week, text of the week, photo of the week). I support revitalizing graphics competitions because it may inspire other people to explore different forms of digital art. As I said earlier, my heart lies with the more traditional style of making tags, so as for my thoughts on that, I feel set stocks/renders/themes are important too, and freestyle should only be a once in a while type theme. Just my thoughts.

I'm only voting against it for selfish reasons seeing as I don't deal with graphics and I wouldn't be able to participate and therefore can't win anything

 

But you get to look at pretty graphics!


I'm looking for more input about what you guys would change from previous competitions. Especially if you would be taking part in the competition.

 

I prefer making tags than everything else, so I'd probably participate if the rewards are decent (miniranks seems alright).

 

I was thinking of getting a "SOTM winner" minirank made, Something obviously just to show off your graphics ability on sythe.

Also the possibility of any sort of file that meets sythe's signature rules (so this means you could include animated signatures)
