When I try to download Java, I get this error.

Error 1723. There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A DLL required for this install to complete could not be run. Contact your support personnel or package vendor.

I un-installed all the old Java versions except one called Java(TM) 6 update 18. When I try to un-install it I get the same error message as when I try to download the most recent Java. The Java(TM) 6 update 18 was installed last year for me.

I went on to Java.com and looked at a list of common errors and this error isn't on there. Then I went to their support center and it said in order to fix this it will cost between $50-$100.

Woah, no idea man. That sounds pretty bad. Perhaps you should try restoring your computer to a previous state (like yesterday, before you uninstalled all the Java things) or something. Probably not the most helpful advice, but still.
