Now that we can have financial-related threads in this forum, let's discuss securities and investments. Don't post about rs gold or bitcoin here unless you have an interesting approach to investing in them. You can use the rest of the forum for those threads.

Not really sure what this thread will become, but I envision it as a place to post investments you've made, investments you're considering, and to give constructive comments on other people's decisions.

I'm considering investing in Bitcoins, but the prices are fluctuating a lot it seems.

Should I be weary, and stay watching for now?

I was following gaming stocks in the past but liquidated it for real estate, currently allocating 20% income to mortgage with the addition of rental income, 30% to emergency funds(bank held TFSA), 50% toward expenses (insurance, car repairs, entertainment, etc.)

Stock investments wise, my best payoff was buying TTWO stocks right after GTA V was announced to be delayed but I sold out too early, still made good profit but nothing compared to profits from real estate investing.

Are you into REITs or some other form of real estate? I've always considered them one of the riskier asset classes and avoided them :|

Physical real estate, mainly residential if I had no tenants it would take up 50% of my income for the mortgage but renting out the home for a year provides a lot of spare income. REIT are pretty risky mainly because its hard to define the value of the portfolio without seeing the operations and land within it but with residential/ commercial real estate there's always the physical property if the economy takes a downturn.

What do you mean renting it out provides a lot of spare income? Doesn't the rental income pay for the mortgage? Are you saying, you have money left over after that? Also, is it a duplex, triplex? Where is your estate located? Is it in an area where land appreciates a lot? Sorry for bombarding with questions but it's revelant questions im curious about.

I'm currently investing in a business that I use to advertise in my signature that is very promising, pm me and we can talk about it if you like. One month from now, I'll be investing a little more into it while investing the rest into index funds. I've read up on them recently and plan on opening an account with my bank next month. What is your experience with indexes?

@LoLAccounts: Read this thread for your answer: http://www.sythe.org/cryptocurrency-finance-discussion/1824603-bitcoin-good-investment-opinions.html I personally wouldn't touch BTC.

It's a semi detached residential home, currently have one family living in it and I break even mortgage to rent wise but what I meant was if I had no tenants I would have to allocate 50% of my current income towards the mortgage payments and cut expenses elsewhere. My properties located in the surrounding area of Toronto and since I decided to commit capital to it a year and a half ago its risen by approximately 15% in value. Where I live the housing market is keeping the economy going (Canada) and with further interest rate cuts potentially on the way this property will probably rise in value, I'm planning on selling it next year to avoid a heavy tax burden, I wouldn't recommend real estate unless you have the income to keep hold of the home in a downturn.

My index funds are terrible I've seen fluctuations of 1-2% either up or down and if adjusted its still the same as when I invested. I recommend investing when your fund is down because it will recover but it won't gice the returns you probably expect but who I bank with is probably different than who you bank with and may have better portfolios, I don't mind the low returns because like I said above its an emergency fund and quickly liquidatable.

Feel free to message me and we can talk. I've also held condominiums in the past and both condominiums and residential free holds have their advantages and disadvantages.

Did you pay 20% down payment? I live in Canada too (Quebec). Montreal (where I live) has been doing fairly well too appreciation-wise. I'm not a homeowner but my sister is of 2 duplexes so I've always been interested in real estate. I currently don't have enough to put down on a house, too young but hopefully in a few years I do. I won't say I know too much about it as again, I'm a little young; I'm trying to learn. Have you adjusted your gain in property value for inflation? I know that takes a good chunk of it (unless I'm wrong somewhere).

I'm aware that homeowner gain through appreciation but after property tax and repairs, what is the actual capital gain? I'm on the fence on whether homes are really a good investment or not for this reason but I guess that would depend on your location. One reason for why I advocate for home ownership is because as you pay mortgage, you are building equity and you don't have to worry about paying rent when you get older and it can also be a source of income if you have a duplex, triplex, etc.

Do you have to pay a welcome fee when you buy real estate and how are property taxes in Toronto? Property tax is heavy here unfortunately.

Hmm, my sister said she's made good money from index funds with the money she used to put down on a mortgage but we had a brief talk about it. I'll talk to her more about it. I hope my bank does better than yours did/does with index funds.

Would be interested to hear what your business venture relates to, feel free to shoot me a pm.

As for index funds, I don't see why they're more desirable than ETFs for most investors; iirc, they offer relative tax advantages and lower fees (if any) than index funds. In my personal opinion, and this is not advice but strictly my opinion, I would buy SPDRs or something of that nature if I wanted an ultra-passive security

Fun idea! I'll go ahead and post here that I bought LNKD at exactly $200.00 a couple weeks ago. I'm confident in the underlying fundamentals, CEO, staff, and business plan. I plan to sell at $280. Max holding time: 1 year. Currently at $210-215. Let's see how it goes. ;)

    Sent you a PM.

I quickly looked it up and for now I'm leaning towards index funds simply because it is a lot simpler and being relatively new to the stock market, I'd like to start off simple before I get into complicated things lol I'll look into it more to decide which I'll go for.

ETFs are still new compared to index funds and not many have heard of it so I'm guessing that is why many seem to invest in index and not in ETFs.

As a whole, though, this portfolio has been good to me, outperforming the s&p by 9% YTD

I'm a second-year going into third year so the door is still open but so far I've completed their Financial training program internship and currently in their global wealth internship. Next summer the goal is Portfolio Analyst internee.

It's like a 3 step process basically. To get into their program you start in the financial training internship, then top 6 are chosen to partake in the global wealth internship and then I can apply to their paid internships and hopefully graduate with a job

    On topic:

I invested into MarkWest before the acquisition by MPLX and it did well for me as a trade stock, not an investment. Turned it over for nice profit. I'd take a look at MPLX. Their shareholders got the short end of the stick in the acqustion but the upside looks ridiculous right now. Definitely recommend taking a look

I added two securities to my watchlist. Both for trading, not necessarily investing although both have potential longterm return: BIIB and INTC
