Not only that but when dealing with this amount of money and BTC it wouldn't even be difficult. Let's be honest like OP said had they kept in as BTC for awhile they probably still wouldn't be caught...

 

Where there is opportunity, there will be corruption. It is easy to fall in that slump because of the ideals to be rich. Temptation is something very hard to overcome when it is in your finger tips. Imagine having about $1,000,000 that was just stolen from a bank, you know it is stolen and you know that there is a possibility of you getting into trouble for taking the cash.. but it is right in your hands! Also, if you find a wallet full of cash on the ground, you take the cash? or do you pick up the wallet and find its owner without touching the contents.. I know 7/10 people will look at it and take the wad of cash.. they might even return it and say that they didn't see any cash in the wallet. People are pressured everyday and once again, its hard to overcome that temptation when it is in your fingertips.

Also, there will be corruption in the ones that you look to for protection, like police. They are there to protect and serve but even as a while male driving down the road, I don't feel safe when I see a cop car, I feel paranoid. Even if I am not doing anything wrong.. I feel threatened by the policeman even if he is just staked out trying to catch speeders. I hate the world we live in that we can't look up to the police because of the few bad apples out there.
