How to tune a guitar with an Ibanez EDGE Tremolo System.

So your looking at this guide to see on how to tune an ibanez EDGE tremolo system. IF you haven't figured out what the Tremolo system does lets go down the basics.

A tremolo system uses the floating technique to raise the pitch of your guitar either flat or sharp. Most newbies call it a "Whammy bar" Tremolo is the more educated word for it. Locate a soon to come "How to string a double locking tremolo system".

Now before we start You should have your string wound up on your guitar. All ready to go.

String Tension
Alright according to the strings you bought you should see the string tension on the pack. Such as. Make sure your strings have no tension what-so-ever on the bridge piece.



These are medium gauged. Starting at E. 1" 010 ending at E. 6" 046.
The string that come with the tremolo come with a light gauge. So you have to change your spring tension.

Flip your guitar backwards. And take the back plate off so it looks like this.



Now that you have it off see how your springs are arranged. Look into the forward section.

Spring Setup

Alright Following on this guide your going to have to go to you string gauge topic, .

1) LIGHT Gauge. These start at E. 1st 0.9.
So your springs should be 3 parrallel to eachother. Leave it that way.

2) MEDIUM Gauge. These start at E. 1st 010.
These should look how my springs are set. In a V shape with one down the middle. If you need to change it take off all the tension on the Tremolo system. Then unscrew the plate where the spring is hooked on to to the body of your guitar.



Then set the springs in the V-shape with the middle spring and tighten it allot. Like in my guitar.
Or you can add a fourth spring. And keep it the same depth it was before.

3) HEAVY Gauge. These start at E. 1st 013 (I think no one usually has these)
with heavy gauge you need to add a fourth spring. All parallel to each other.
And tighten it alot!


Tuning your strings
Now to tune your string. Make sure all your strings have no tension on them. Wound them all down. Also make sure your locking nut is loose. Locking nut is

And the upper column is taken off.

Now tune your string according to your tuner. This guitar should be set at 430 Hz.

Now to tune them you use these things called tuning nuts or TUNERS.

Now here is how you tune the. 1 being high E.

6) 2 Steps up.
5) 2 Steps up.
4) 1.5 Steps up.
3) 1.5 Steps up.
2) .5 Steps up.
1) In tune.

Now check string 6. Should be lower than usual. Keep doing it until there all either a little bit flat. If ones sharp tune it down and all the other strings will go up. Repeat until tune. Once tuned your bridge should be leveled.


If its too up raise your spring tension. If its too down lower it.
After you got it somewhat in tune put put your coloumn on it they should all go sharp. Or a little higher pitched. Then put your locking nut tight.



Now you use your fine tuners to find tune the guitar to pitch. Remember if you tune one up another will go down.
These are the fine tuners.

Hah, when I read the topic title, I though of my friend. He had a B.C. Rich with a Floyd Rose on it. He never knew how to tune it with the locking nut...He was scared of breaking it I suppose, either way, he would've been lost. So he had to bring it to a guitar shop to get it in a different tuning whenever he wanted to change it. The place messed it up so badly...he had to get the whole tremolo system replaced, so he just sold it back to the store and never went back.
